disappearance of her daughter decades ago. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec has new clues in the case. >> reporter: her mother wrote on her facebook page last night, dear michaela, this could be in. she is talking about a bone fragment that was found. they tested it here at the hayward police department. the results were inconclusive. that bone now being sent to a lab in virginia. the results could take weeks. but there are some reasons to believe that that bone fragment could belong to michaela garecht. she was abducted in hayward in 1988. that bone was initially given to the family of another victim, joann hobson's remains found in a well in linden, a well where remains from victims of two serial killers dubbed the "speed freak" killers have been found. that was back in february. when hobson's family received the remains, they ordered some tests, suspicious after seeing investigators dig up the burial site with a backhoe. that testing found 28 of the bone fragments given to the family belonged to other people. at least three other people, including a child between the ages of 5 and

ohio, florida, and virginia, in the cbs/"new york times" polling, it feels like everything has moved to what i would call preconvention, right, before there was a democratic bounce, and before there was any sort of romney bounce, where this is a close race, but when you look in the battleground states there seems to be still a small advantage for the president. look at ohio. i think the most important number of the polls we had today was this early voting result that we found where one in five ohioans have already voted and the president's winning 2-1 among those folks that have already voted. that's a big organizational advantage. he's banking some vote. that's a big deal, and that's an important result to look at. i also think there's some other trend here that i want to keep an eye on which is it seems romney got a bigger bounce in the national polls than we're seeing in some of these states and could it be that there was more room for him to grow in the non-battleground states than there was in the battleground states where there's been a defined campaign going on over the last s

. quinnepiac poll, "new york times/cbs news poll" finding governor romney gaining strength in colorado, virginia, and which is even though the president still hold as slight advantage in two of those states. shane deapril, editor of campaigns and election magazine. great to have you back with us. interesting to hear the calf yes yacht there. gains by governor romney but the president still slightly made. what do you make of these polls? >> jenna we talk about how presidential debates are rarely decisive. history has certainly shown that to be the case. what this latest set of numbers show they could really provide some momentum one way or the other. i don't think there is any doubt that mitt romney's solid performance in the first debate led to particularly the uptick in his favorability numbers you've seen in a couple of these polls. overall though, the top lynum members still, there's an advantage there for president obama. momentum certainly swinging mitt romney's way in a couple of these states. he has to keep that up particularly in virginia, ohio and florida. jenna: in "the wall

say the major networks, abc, cbs, cnn and fox news all say they plan to use the screen shots regularly throughout the vice presidential debate. they said it is even considering them during the presidential debate last week. in denver some of the candidates in the past have tried it with varying degrees of success to the limit from using what our reaction shots from candidates. to bill clinton and president george bush in '92 when it starts to write into the debate contract the television networks could not broadcast such images. the story goes on to say networks use whatever schultz the choose despite the pressure from the campaign and the year typically nine cameras hosted by the commission on the presidential debate a nonpartisan organization that oversees the production while the commission has final say over whether the cameras -- where they are placed they do not control the mechanics of filming the camera angles or decisions about when to cut away. it is left solely to the discretion of the network pool is providing the net broadcast. was abc and thursday this cnn. wasn

three others. lieutenant colonel andrew wood told cbs news that his request for beefed-up security was rejected by washington. the man in charge of all state department personnel is under patrick kennedy who held the job since 2007. fox news learned that the day after the attack kennedy privately briefed the staffers and told them it appears to be a sophisticated attack. but four days after that briefing, the u.s. ambassador susan rice offered a different narrative. she said rather that we don't see at this point that it was a coordinated premeditated attack. it was three days before any senior u.s. official stated that the benghazi incident was indeed a terrorist attack. >> the americans deserve the truth on what happened. you will find that the bits and pieces are coming out. we are both troubled by what we saw unfold. in the end the truth ought to be done and people ought to be held accountable if bad decisions were mad. >> the u.s. has obtained footage of when the attacks were actually underway. that should shed light on what happened in benghazi. >> steve: we'll be watching. thank

strong leadership qualities between these two candidates? look at the quinnipiac university cbs news, "new york times" poll in colorado. mitt romney, 67% strong leadership qualities. barack obama 54%. let's go to virginia, 64% for mitt romney, 62% for barack obama. and paul in wisconsin 65% for mitt romney, 59% for barack obama. so clearly in those three battleground states they think romney has stronger leadership qualities than the president does. >> well, that's what comes from having a strong debate. but notice this was a gain for romney much more than a loss for president obama. i think that's really unusual about this last debate. romney helped himself, there's no doubt. he eroded the president's lead, but he didn't really erode the president's position. in other words, people still like the president, they support the president. if the election were held today, he'd still win. it would be a lot closer than a week or two ago. these internals do matter. and it's wise i think we're highlighting strong leader. look at things like cares about me, for the middle class. let's se
